Little things add up. You don’t gain weight overnight. You gain it hour by hour, day by day, week by week, by eating more calories than you burn off through exercise. You don’t lose weight overnight either. You lose it hour by hour, day by day, week by week, by the simple process of eating less and exercising more everyday. Nothing fancy, just little things that add up.
You don’t get bad credit or good credit overnight. Your credit profile is built over weeks and months of paying bills on time.
Some things take a long time to build.
A first impression happens quickly. It is the big and quick view we get of something. The way you feel when you walk in a coffee house, when you are welcomed by a barista, the warmth and cleanliness of a place.
A good first impression usually happens when someone looks healthy, has a firm handshake, and connects with their eyes.
Sometimes though, the first impression is not backed up by the little things that build sustainability. This leads to inconsistency. Things can look a certain way for a while, like sucking in your stomach for a picture, but eventually you have to breath and your stomach goes back out. The little things add up and eventually overshadow the first impression.
When the first impression is welcoming--a clean coffee house with a friendly barista, a great cappuccino with detailed art, an espresso pulled correctly, with beans ground fresh and roasted within days, beans purchased from a cooperative that cared, tended, and sorted them by hand, washed them, and exported them--then there is congruence.
Look good, give a great first impression, but do the little things moment by moment, day by day that back up the first impression of looking good. Don’t just look good, be good.J
